(Sigh) Thanks Linden Lab

Well, seeing how the new trademark policy has effectively, well, at least in my twisted brain, murdered the Second Life fansites (and because i can’t sleep now), let’s check the casualties and injuries:

This Blog: from teenslblog.com to teenmetaverse.net

Katharine Berry’s tslprofiles.com site, as well as tslblogs.com, and the long defunct tslemporium.com.

Note: Kath is our wonderful administrator and code monkey.

Long running sites such as slexchange.com will have to change.

To me, this measure is ironic, all of these sites stemmed from SL’s lack of features, and now they’ll all have to go get new domain names.

So, to leave you with a quote from Katharine Berry:

Thank you, Linden Lab, for obliterating months of work. It is appreciated. I hate you people (or at least whoever came up with this stupid idea.)

The Grid Weekly: The Skies are Clear

Hi Again

So, not much happened this week, economy wise, the Linden stayed at the same rate as last week.

The error 500’s have been flushed out, and all is well on secondlife.com

Sorry i don’t have much to write about this week, hopefully more next week.

Eden - The Whole Truth.

Hey everyone, it’s time for me to inform you all of some really exciting news!
With the help of Heather Quasimodo and a few other of my good friends, I’ve taken over management of Eden. We cleared and started re-creating the sim yesterday - and I’m proud to say that our team of builders and designers consists of Heather Quasimodo, Sylver Bu, Natalia Obscure and Brooke Barmy (with a few other surprises as well =P). It’s been so hard for me to keep this a secret, but it was for the best. However, a lot of you have been wondering about all of this - and many of you are getting the wrong idea on what’s been happening. I want to explain it to you as best I can. Here it goes:

Hey Guys.

My name’s Steven Fermi, and I’ll be working at the blog from now on. Some of you know me; hell, I’m sure most of you do. Anyway, for those who don’t, I’m an architect who does a good job of staying under the radar most of the time.

Unlike the other stories posted here so far, I’ll do the best I can to post all the trials and tribulations that take place on the grid daily. That’s right, daily. Unless I have other commitments, which is about 36/305ths of the time, or a little less than 1/9th. Unless I have a huge project. Then, no.

What really irks me is that all the teen blogs that I’ve seen cover only what one could easily find on the forums, or when it comes to the statistics, the SL website.

I hope during my time here to try to actually examine the grid as a whole, and actually almost “critique” it. What is defined as the “top” of the grid isn’t really the top. The “top” of the grid is defined as the “most popular or most advertised events held by the most known people”. Being on the “top” doesn’t mean that they are the best at that skill; it means that they have done well enough so that they have achieved almost a monopoly on the market. Or in the case of Dernier Cri, a group has monopolized the market.

The actual top of the grid is those who have achieved near-perfection in their craft; those who are worthy of being called the top. At face value, it is not a well-defined layer. In a grid of many thousands (the main grid as many millions), what one would define the top is “the people who are best at a certain skill, but in my own social circle”.

I am not afraid to speak my mind. This may not always come to my advantage, but it is true.

I hope to post soon,

Steven.

Having some trouble coming up with enough L$?

I’ve recently come across an awesome website that allows you to make some quick and easy money. The concept is really simple. You sign up for this website, watch up to 20 advertisements for 30 seconds a day (you don’t actually have to watch, just keep the window open for 30 seconds - and they provide you a counter, so you know how long you have left to keep it open). For every ad that you watch, you earn 1 cent in real-world money. One cent is not a lot, but the cool thing about this site is that - you can refer all your friends, and you’ll get a cent for every ad that THEY watch. Let’s say that you refer ten people, and all of them watch the 20 ads every day. That means that you could make at least $2 USD daily. Add more people, and you can make more.

Clothing tutorial!

Heather Quasimodo has recently written and posted a clothing tutorial for anyone that wants to learn a bit more on how to create clothing in photoshop :). It’s full of really easy-to-follow steps and screenshots. You can check it out here! :D

Good luck!

Alex Harbinger will take your questions

Q: How long have you been active in second life?
A: My Second Life Birth date is 9/22/2005

Q: How did you start making money and build your “empire”?
A: My business career started back in City 4, now known as Hippoden (After two name changes). I started with a 512m^2 plot, owning a small scripting store. It sold scripting guides (Basically scripts with commented documentation I added in to help others learn how to script). After that, I started Mega-Mall within the city on a plot slightly larger than two thousand meters squared.

Q: When did you get your first land (size), mall (location), and island?
A: (See above). Not long after I joined I purchased my first 512m^2 plot. It was probably within a week of really becoming active. My first mall was probably two weeks (or so) after that, which lasted until the snow sims were added onto the Grid. Mega-Mall then moved to Shasta to become Mega-Mall Snow.

Anna’s Designs New “Michael” Hair

Hmmmmm, looks like designer Anna Normandy listened to us asking her to make more mens products. Finally, she release her new “Michael” collection of hair. The second I got word of the release, i immediately went over to get a copy for myself. I bought the “Cinnamin” Pack that has reddish hair. To tell you truth, I liked the hair…a lot. Even though Anna does not have the styles and variety that Wicked Loudon does, this is a great start. I liked the hair SO much in fact, that I have replaced it. The hair is simple, no flairs, but this simplicity is very attractive. The only thing that I found a wee bit annoying was that if you looked at the head from the back, it seems as if you are wearing a wig, but that was quickly fixed with a bit of adjusting individual hair pieces. Overall though, I would definitely recommend this hair for anyone looking for something new and different than Wicked’s hair. So go over to Dernier Cri, try out the Demo, buy the hair, and wait for more!

Cory Ondrejka, fired from Linden Lab?

I’ve recently been informed by a good friend of mine that it appears Cory Ondrejka has been fired from Linden Lab. For those of you who do not know, Cory is the CTO of Linden Lab, and the person to thank for the Second Life scripting language. Thanks to our friends at Massively, I’ve been able to get a copy of the email sent out by Philip Rosedale (CEO of Linden Lab) to the Linden Lab employees.

Cory is going to leave LL. He has been with us for 7 years, and was the fourth person to join. So this is a big deal. Cory has been a huge part of the company, having designed big parts of SL, hired many people, contributed greatly to the culture, and given a powerful voice to SL and LL. Among other things, he had the original design idea for the love machine, single handedly wrote the scripting language, and got us all doing A&Os back in 2001. Losing him will be hard for the company. I will miss him a lot. What’s worse is that ultimately his leaving is my decision.

The email also states the reasoning behind Philip’s decision.

Cory and I have differences in how we think Linden should be run, differences that in the past few months have become irreconcilable. These are tensions that were more manageable when we were smaller, and there have been times that they have helped us do great work together. But now, as we change and grow as a company, I feel that we need a different set of strengths in engineering leadership. I strongly believe that this is the right decision, although not without pain, for both LL and Cory. Of course, I’m not going to go into the details of these differences. This is one of those times when, in having me as your leader, you will also have to trust me in my decision.

In a statement Philip made recently, he’s confirmed the fact that Cory is going to be leaving by the end of the year - but he has not, however confirm that it is his own decision.

Thanks to Massively, I’ve gotten the statement that Cory made to the Linden Lab employees, and it is as follows:

Trying to sum up 7 years of work at Linden is an impossible task. All nighters at the Linden Street office. Gaining 20 pounds but then losing 70. Flying 350,000 miles on Linden travel. Recruiting and hiring many of you. Creating a programming language that now had 2.5 billion lines of code written in it – note to self, next time spend more than one night designing language. Changing the world.

It has been an absolute thrill working with all of you on Second Life. When Philip looked across a rickety card table in November of 2000 and told me that we would do more than build a great product, we needed to build a great company, too, I knew it would be a wild ride. Through the peaks and the valleys, Philip’s ideas challenged and inspired me. They often led to solutions I would never have considered and helped to make Second Life what it is today.

I continue to believe in both Second Life and Linden Lab, but Philip and my visions for the future of Linden Lab are divergent enough that he decided to lead in his own way. While I will miss all of you, I have confidence in engineering - in all of you - to adapt and excel going forward. You are a phenomenal collection of talents and I know that both Linden Lab and Second Life will be hugely successful.

as Tateru Nino stated on Massively, “Ondrejka is obviously being sensitive, proud and diplomatic. It also gives the impression of ‘fired’ rather than ‘quit’, but he’s definitely going out in style, as a leader. This is a classic ‘creative differences’ situation, and Ondrejka’s handling it very professionally, with positive messages, reinforcement and motivation.

The statement made by Philip does not state that Ondrejka is to be fired - but after reading the emails sent to all of the Linden Lab employees; it’s hard to believe anything else. Cory’s been a huge part of Second Life’s creation and development - and without him on the team, it’s hard to say what the future holds for Second Life and Linden Lab.

Thanks so much to moo Money and everyone at Massively for helping to inform us of this horrible news. I’ll keep you updated as best I can as more is uncovered.

Snapblog and Scheduled Downtime.

Well, it looks like both the live grid and preview have been offline for some scheduled downtime. According to the Official Linden Blog, it was only supposed to run from 7 a.m. SLT to 11 a.m. SLT. However, grid downtimes are known to run a little bit longer than originaly stated - and it’s been recently said that the grid will be down until 12 p.m SLT. From what I’ve read on the blog, LL is working on upgrading databases, and adding asset server capacity.

On a more creative note, I was talking to my friend moo yesterday - and she sent me a link to a really interesting website called Scrapblog. I’m a huge art lover, and I’ve always enjoyed scrapbooking when given the chance. Scrapblog allows you to create an online scrapbook without any downloads or hard to understand tools. I was really amazed on how easy it is to use (pretty much all drag and drop), and it’s all free. You can even make a Scrapblog page without signing up - unless you want to publish it, so other people can see it. Once it’s published, it’s very easy to share with others, embed on on blogs, and post it to other sites. One of my favorite features is that with a few clicks to verify your account, you can import pictures from many different sites (such as photobucket, flickr and facebook) right onto your scrapbook page. Scrapblog offers many different backgrounds, templates, stickers and frames for you to mix and match with - and some of the results that I’ve seen are really interesting.

Check it out for yourself! It’s a lot of fun, and it’s really easy to use. I look foward to seeing all your creations, and please feel free to post links as comments for this blog post.

Second Life Currency Security Comprimise

The following report taken from http://www.news.com/8301-13772_3-9827500-52.html?tag=nefd.blgs

Over on Dean Takahashi’s San Jose Mercury News blog today, he reported on the discovery by a pair of security researchers that it may be possible to steal Second Life users’ in-world currency.

That would be a big problem, of course, because the currency, known as Linden dollars, are directly convertible to U.S. dollars.

According to Takahashi’s story, hackers Charles Miller and Dino Dai Zovi told him that they have uncovered an exploit that could allow someone to fleece Second Life residents of their Linden dollars.

The exploit is related to Apple’s QuickTime software, which is used to display videos in Second Life.

“The exploit works because Second Life allows users to embed videos or pictures on their characters or their virtual property,” Takahashi wrote. “When someone comes nearby and is within view of the object, the Second Life software activates QuickTime so it can play the video or picture. In doing so, QuickTime directs the Second Life software to a Web site. By exploiting the flaw in QuickTime, the hackers can direct the Second Life software to a malicious Web site that then allows them to take over the Second Life avatar.

The end result of that could be that a malicious hacker could then strip the avatar of any Linden dollar holdings.

For its part, Takahashi wrote, Linden Lab told him that the exploit is easily patched. Nonetheless, the company put up a warning on its blog Friday.

Takahashi said that Linden Lab told him, “We were alerted a short time ago by Internet security professionals that a QuickTime exploit has been discovered which may allow an attacker to crash or exploit any user of the QuickTime software from Apple. The Second Life viewer uses QT to play videos and therefore this exploit could potentially affect the residents of Second Life. This exploit affects all platforms that use QuickTime and, to date, Apple has not released a fix for it.”

To date, however, Takahashi wrote, Linden Lab said it isn’t aware of anyone actually using the exploit to rob anyone.

For residents of Second Life, then, the solution may be to avoid holding onto large numbers of Linden dollars.

As I told Takahashi when he asked me to comment for his story on Linden dollar security, “As one SL business owner said to me…you should always have a backup plan in case of a glitch that causes you to lose everything, because you never know what might happen. And in the case of Linden dollars, that likely means doing regular (Linden dollar/U.S. dollar) exchanges so as not to keep too many Lindens in your SL account. You can’t lose what’s not there.”

Asuka Martin Interview

We are expecting to post an interview with Asuka Martin (Dernier Cri || Asuka’s Designs) soon, we are just waiting for aprooval to post the transcripts.

Fall TSL Town Hall

Well, duiring the town hall a very wide variety of topics was discussed, from WindLight, to a possible All Ages Area (AAA). There were more than 50 avatars squeezed into the little parcel that is the TSL Multimedia Stage, notice, in the picture, that it seems nearly empty, thats is because there were so many avatars, very few were able to be made visible. Many people chose to leave, here is a very cut down transcript of the meeting, when we get a full transcript, we will post it here.

[16:12] Blue Linden: “Would LL be willing to update the TSL webpage more frequently (i.e. once a month) if the residents also agreed to produce content for it?”

[16:14] Blue Linden: the reason the TSL site doesn’t get the same kind of upgrades as SL site is that it’s not meant to be interactive in the same way
[16:14] Blue Linden: like a lot of things…..when SL get’s a major upgrade it benefits everyone….TSL and SL together
[16:15] Blue Linden: so TSL website doesn’t get the same kind of attention

[16:20] Mia Linden: [16:04] kevin Oto: no gestures land seting ,add flash so we can play flash games or add youtube videos. Let car use more then 32 prims.

[16:23] Blue Linden: we’re working on web-in-SL and have made some progress…..
[16:23] Blue Linden: f1 is HTML in a window in SL…..
[16:23] Blue Linden: before long you’ll be able to put HTML on a prim
[16:23] Blue Linden: which will change SL dramatically
[16:24] Blue Linden: Java support is a different issue though…and that might take a little bit longer. But it’s coming!

[16:24] Mia Linden: [15:59] Chilko Tardis: what steps do you plan to take in response to the recent complaints by Katharine Berry and many other teens demanding several features that are present on the MG but are absent here, such as the MapAPI. Or Signups.
[16:25] Blue Linden: some of the issues brought up by Kat were very valid
[16:25] Blue Linden: registration being broken for example
[16:26] Blue Linden: that was a huge problem…if you weren’t aware, only north americans with cel phones could make accounts
[16:27] Blue Linden: Paypal was fixed last week, however, so now people can make accounts around the globe
[16:27] Blue Linden: which is what we had always intended of course
[16:27] Blue Linden: as to the accusation that TSL is neglected, it’s a difficult issue
[16:28] Blue Linden: as with the web page there are definitely times when company resources spent on SL benefit TSL equally

[16:29] Mia Linden: [15:59] SpikeTheCat Zapedzki: Ok, Mia, I got a question, Will TSL eveer invite Famous authors on TSL and let them talk about… “stuff”?

—-sidenote: Blue Linden crashed at this point, so Mia Linden gave his responses. At least that’s what the official statement said. <_

[16:41] Mia Linden: [16:09] Eric Mauvaise: is Linden Labs going to add more mainland sims to increase land in TSL?

[16:41] Blue Linden: we add sims to SL and TSL based on demand, and there hasn’t been much demand on TSL, I’m afraid
[16:42] Blue Linden: there is a certain amount of land available for sale right now….if all of that was bought tonight, we’d definitely put up more sims
([16:42] Vince Bosen: 4L$/sqm land prices isn’t alot of demand? >_>)
[16:42] Blue Linden: Vince, you should see the prices on SL >__< [16:44] Blue Linden: but is now fixed yay [16:44] Mia Linden: [16:10] SunshineSmile Sands: Hey! How ya doin? Mia, I was going to ask an interesting questions Im NOT sure the lindens would know about.. but its worth a shot.. I have thought about lindens combining the adult grid with the teen grid [ and restrict places until you show your ID that your 18 so theres no access] I was wondering if they were going to join them up? [16:11] SunshineSmile Sands: xD does that make sence in some way? lol [16:45] Blue Linden: SunshineSmile! you’re a genius
[16:45] Blue Linden: hehe one of the reason TSL hasn’t had any major changes or upgrades is that we’ve been devoting TSL-specific resources to the idea of an All Ages Area
[16:46] Blue Linden: we see a couple of real problems with the way SL/TSL works…..
[16:46] Blue Linden: 1) you can’t teach your parents to build/script….and many of you could teach them a lot
[16:46] Blue Linden: it’s not cool that you can’t be with your family in SL
[16:47] Blue Linden: 2) LL’s 18th birthday present to you is that you can’t see your friends anymore
[16:47] Blue Linden: that’s really bad….
[16:47] Blue Linden: TSL was made so teens could be in SL…..used to be you had to be 18 or you couldn’t be here at all
[16:47] Blue Linden: so we made TSL
[16:48] Blue Linden: but we think we’re at the point where we can allow teens for broader participation in SL
[16:49] Blue Linden: this All Ages Area, is still being worked on….it’s likely going to be a space in SL that both adults and teens can access
[16:49] Blue Linden: this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have teen-only space
[16:49] Blue Linden: having a place where there are no adults is still a good idea
[16:50] Blue Linden: how AAA relates to TSL is yet to be determined….we’ll give you more info when we know

[16:49] Mia Linden: [16:12] ionchill Allen: is there an estimated time on when windlight will be on the main grid if so how long?
[16:50] Blue Linden: WINDLIGHT is a client, and you can download it now to check it out
([16:50] Cloud Koba: A laggy one…)
[16:51] Blue Linden: (you can shut down all the options and it’s actually faster than the regular client
[16:51] Blue Linden: I don’t have the release date, but first look is to get the bugs sorted out…download it, and send in bug reports and we’ll be able to release it sooner!

[16:52] Mia Linden: [16:43] Meatwad Extraordinaire: Are there any ideas going around of how to encoruage the TSL population to participate more in the community, meaning resident-hosted events more than once a week, etc?
[16:52] Blue Linden: well, Meat, as you might’ve noticed at the beginning of this meeting, it can be pretty tough to host events in TSL ;p
[16:52] Blue Linden: I’m lucky there are a bunch of lindens here riding shotgun
[16:53] Blue Linden: we had encouraged events early on in TSL’s history, but they never really became a regular thing…..
[16:53] Blue Linden: instead people have other types of social events, that don’t generate the kind of trouble ;p

[16:54] Mia Linden: [16:17] Mariel Voyunicef: I ask again: Would LL be willing to update the TSL webpage more frequently (i.e. once a month) if the residents also agreed to produce content for it?

[16:54] Blue Linden: I did that one first….but I realized I didn’t answer all of it
[16:54] Blue Linden: the idea of resident-provided content
[16:55] Blue Linden: the problem with TSL webpage is upkeep….and resources are best spent on SL page which everyone has access to, not just a minority of residents
[16:56] Blue Linden: maintaining user-generated content would likely require a similar amount of time, so it’s not something we wanted to devote our time to
[16:56] Blue Linden: but I did put up a resource on the forums for residents to add their blogs and webpages to
[16:56] Blue Linden: you can email me at blue@Lindenlab.com
[16:56] Blue Linden: and I’ll list your site
[16:56] Blue Linden: that’s likely the best way to get resident content up without us telling you what you can and can’t do

[16:56] Mia Linden: [16:19] Myrror Remblai: How well can sl handel full 3d models getting uploaded, and or how well do they work, if at all.
[16:57] Blue Linden: well, at this point, there’s no official support for uploading of 3D models
[16:57] Blue Linden: sculpties is as close as you can get right now
[16:58] Blue Linden: although some residents have made translators so you can use 3D programs to create sculpties
[16:58] Blue Linden: google SL + (3D program of your choice)

[16:58] Mia Linden: [16:49] Emondrell Raymaker: One quick question: What’s the Focus sim for? It looms rather ominously, and the MGers can’t see it… Yet it’s marked MG o,O

[16:58] Blue Linden: Focus, eh…hmmm
[16:58] Blue Linden: lol
([16:58] Goku Neumann: hes pretending he doesn’t know ;-))
[16:58] Blue Linden: that’s on the main grid
[16:59] Blue Linden: hehe i wasn’t pretending ;p
[16:59] Blue Linden: it looks like it’s a SL sim that was mistakenly set to TSL
[16:59] Blue Linden: not sure though, I’ll check it out

[16:59] Mia Linden: [16:49] Omega Okame: If someone in tg or mg had a second account in the other grid what will you do?

[17:00] Blue Linden: if someone on TSL has an account on the other grid, the support team can cancel the account, or permanently ban the person
[17:00] Blue Linden: if an adult from SL made an account on TSL they could be banned and LL could send their info to the authorities

[17:01] Mia Linden: [16:22] Mike Denneny: How about some new type of rendering system that allows shading on a autocad level. It would allow casting of shadows based on where light sources are.

[17:02] Blue Linden: Mike…..you’ll need to talk to the Windlight team about new rendering systems and new shaders
[17:02] Blue Linden: but they’ve got some amazing long term plans….
[17:02] Blue Linden: reflective water and gorgeous clouds are just part of it
[17:03] Blue Linden: someday there will be realistic trees, mappable terrain
([17:03] Rufus Skall: I think the clouds are ugly.)
[17:03] Blue Linden: Rufus….go to youtube and search for Nimble
[17:03] Blue Linden: the clouds you see in Windlight are 2D placeholders
[17:03] Blue Linden: the 3D clouds are coming and they’re amazing
([17:03] Goku Neumann: To the TG, Blue?)
[17:04] Blue Linden: Yes Goku….one of the reasons you don’t see a lot of TSL-specific stuff is because we are making ALL of SL rock
([17:04] Sephiroth Everidge: …. 3-D clouds? Wouldnt that KILL the game? Clouds are rather intricate…)
[17:04] Blue Linden: no Sephiroth….windlight’s Nimble is superfast 3D volumetric clouds

[17:04] Mia Linden: 6:24] Curly Fride: What about Web-on-a-prim, I’d love to have a working computer in my apartment. I know it sounds silly, but it would be WICKED AWESIME!

[17:05] Blue Linden: can’t wait for web-on-a-prim
[17:05] Blue Linden: we’ve made a lot of progress on it, but you can’t see most of it because it’s all back-end code
[17:05] Blue Linden: but you’ll eventually be able to replace a prim side with a webpage
([17:06] Goku Neumann: Would the webpage cost 10l to upload?)
[17:06] Blue Linden: not sure when you’ll first see web-on-a-prim…..it’s a big project
[17:06] Blue Linden: lol…good question

[17:06] Mia Linden: [16:47] SabrinaNever Offcourse: Hello Mia,i have a question……..Ok,so, When you want to buy Linden, through the website,is it cheaper to buy it from SL website or SL Exchange?
[17:06] Blue Linden: er…..I think they are the same. not sure

[17:07] Blue Linden: OKAY…..meeting was meant for 1 hour….but Mia says there are a lot of questions left
[17:07] Blue Linden: let’s do SPEED ANSWER
[17:07] Blue Linden cracks knuckles

[17:08] Mia Linden: [16:29] Natalia Obscure: My question may not be TSL related, but as for Windlight, how will Linden Labs satisfy users who can use it compared to users who do not have the ability to use it such as those who have laptops?

[17:08] Blue Linden: we need to lower system specs…..Windlight’s top features need a good machine, but at low settings, it runs better than the regular client :0

[17:09] Mia Linden: [16:29] Rabor159 Silverspar: when itransfer to adult sl will i keep all of my items that i aquired in tsl?

[17:09] Blue Linden: yes

[17:09] Mia Linden: [16:30] Jacksp500 Boa: I was wondering when the Havok4 Client will go online on the TG, if not already done so.

[17:09] Blue Linden: SL + TSL will both get Havok at the same time…..when it’s done testing. SOon!

[17:09] Mia Linden: [16:31] Sylver Bu: What is the current progress on Linden Lab’s plan for an All Ages Area?

[17:10] Blue Linden: that’s a big question…the lightning round answer is…we’re halfway there

17:10] Mia Linden: [16:32] Christina Hereter: How do you make linden dolars
[17:10] Blue Linden: with lots of linden cents

[17:11] Mia Linden: [16:41] Chilko Tardis: could we have some better messages of the day? Like chinese proverbs?
[17:11] Blue Linden: email blue@lindenlab.com with messages of the day, and I’ll add the good ones to the rotation

[17:11] Mia Linden: [16:42] Xa Keon: I know there have been lots of updates and such lately, but is this support focusing on the Main Grid? Or are the fixes and troubleshooting more universal?

[17:11] Blue Linden: phil, hard rudder left for clockwise, and wing over

[17:12] Mia Linden: [16:44] Fred Kinsei: About how many TG residents there are?
([17:11] Eric Mauvaise: my uncle says tps on the MG are alot faster!)
[17:12] Blue Linden: eric depends on where you are going to and where you are coming from….teleports work the same on both grids
[17:13] Blue Linden: Fred, about 86,000 signups…..about 9,000 active

[17:13] Mia Linden: [16:45] Vince Bosen: Why does AR on land set to 0 when you buy land? Simply changing that to 1 would almost eliminate sim lag due to object spam.

[17:13] Blue Linden: good idea Vince, I think it should be like that too

[17:13] Mia Linden: [16:46] Phil Delorean: Is there a way or will there be a way to “report” land that has been given to Governor Linden so it can be put back on the market? [16:57] Phil Delorean: Will Blue ever be my BFF?

[17:13] Blue Linden: I’ll harass someone about that
[17:14] Blue Linden: yes, Phil, go to secondlife.com/support and file a ticket with the sim and coordinates of the plot and it will be put on the governor’s TO DO list
[17:14] Blue Linden: I am BFF with all residents

[17:14] Mia Linden: [16:58] Malifico Bade: Another Question (:P); Will there ever be a PhotoShop/Sculpty/Animator/Voice Recorder(To Make Sounds[So it would be client-side i presumer]) Induced into the main Second Life client?

[17:15] Blue Linden: adding new toolsets to SL takes resources away from SL-specific stuff…..why re-invent the paint program when there are a dozen great free ones

[17:15] Mia Linden: [16:50] Clash Darkes: Are there any plans to fix Teen Grids shot ecconomy?
[17:16] Blue Linden: shot economy??
[17:16] Blue Linden: I disagree ;p
[17:16] Blue Linden: teens have less money to spend….we can’t really fix that exactly….unless we give you all jobs ;p

[17:17] Mia Linden: [16:53] Benett Carter: First land was shut down a while back because adults would take advantage of it, but teens need that discount, is there any way to have first land on the teen grid again?
(unanswered)

[17:17] Mia Linden: [17:01] Emondrell Raymaker: Is communication between the MG and the TG disallowed? For example email-based systems?
[17:18] Blue Linden: eesh…that’s a REALLY good one Emondrell
[17:18] Blue Linden: okay…here’s how it works….communicating directly with MG is bad….bannable
[17:18] Blue Linden: if you have a script that mails an external server, that’s fine….we don’t discourage SL + web services
[17:19] Blue Linden: if that server contacts main grid, we won’t tell you what to do with your RL server
([17:19] Ghost Tone: We shall out smart the lindens)
[17:19] Blue Linden: hey…no replacing blue >_< [17:19] Mia Linden: [17:03] Alex Harbinger: Question for Blue: You stated earlier not only that an All Ages Area is being worked on, but also that most, if not all of TSL-specific resources are being used for this. With so much devotion to this idea, we should be entitled to more information - ETAs (even rough ones are better than none), a better understanding of such an area (Is it merely a sim? Maybe all PG sims on MG (By definition, TG PG sims and MG PG sim rules follow the same guidelines, no?), et cetera), and hopefully a place with up-to-date information on these developments. Would this be at all possible? [17:19] Blue Linden: ooo….I never said “most if not all”! [17:19] Blue Linden: and you have all the info we can give you
[17:20] Blue Linden: a while ago, philip was on TSL talking about us thinking about All ages area

[17:20] Mia Linden: [17:09] Goku Neumann: I have heard rumors about everyone getting their own sim using the server their computer has. Can you confirm or bust this rumor? [17:16] Goku Neumann: You can be a MythBuster! =)

[17:21] Blue Linden: not exactly Goku….it’s more complicated than that…and I’m not technical enough to explain it sorry >_< [17:21] Blue Linden: you could possibly set up your own servers when we open-source server, but it might not be exactly like hosting up a webpage [17:22] Blue Linden: all the “stuff” in SL will still have to run off the databases [17:22] Mia Linden: [17:10] Cory Brando: What about in-game recording software? So we could use an internal progra in SL to record SL? [17:22] Blue Linden: like SL-paint…there are free 3rd party programs to record that would likely be better than what we’d make
[17:22] Blue Linden: Fraps is a good one, yes

[17:23] Mia Linden: [17:11] Sephiroth Everidge: will havoc 4 feature any other notable additions, such as mutli-link objects?

[17:23] Blue Linden: nothing like that….no raising the link limit, no multi-link….nothing shiny and candy like. But it will mean much less sim crashing

[17:24] Mia Linden: [17:13] Ghost Tone: When exactly is the next Map refresh?

[17:25] Blue Linden: map refresh is a mystery to me…..it takes a long time to refresh all the sims, who’s numbers keep growing

[17:25] Mia Linden: [17:13] Mariel Voyunicef: Why are there no public statistics of the TG?

[17:26] Blue Linden: Mariel, we rarely get requests for that and it would require webdev resources
[17:26] Blue Linden: it might not be moot after AAA

[17:26] Mia Linden: [17:19] Malifico Bade: Also; What about setting upa E-Mail system within SL, as in each person gets there own e-mail, so mine woul dbe something like malificobade@secondlife.com, this would be helpful if you are ever incappable of getting online second life, if it had your friends in contacts and you could IM/E-Mail them using your SL E-Mail [17:25] Malifico Bade: Or.. you could possible call it Mia-Mail! =)

[17:27] Blue Linden: Mal, we’re bringing in a social systems expert to work with us on the Community team….she’ll be looking at better ways for people to connect in SL
[17:27] Blue Linden: I wouldn’t mind having a blue@secondlife.com address to go with my blue@lindenlab.com one ;p

[17:28] Mia Linden: [17:24] Xa Keon: Are there any major changes expected for the building system in the future?
[17:28] Blue Linden: well, not as significant as adding flexy or sculptie prims, no not at the moment…..web-on-a-prim could affect builds though

[17:29] Mia Linden: [17:27] SabrinaNever Offcourse: can there ever be a way that my mom on the Main Grid, can give me items that the Lindens can approve? or is there a way or can there be a way that we could contact are relatives that are in the MG?

[17:30] Blue Linden: Sabrina, we want All Ages Area to be a way for you and your mom to exchange items, L$ etc, while hanging out and working/playing together

[17:31] Mia Linden: [17:26] Praise Thor: What is the status on Volunteering at LL? Can you still Intern?

[17:31] Blue Linden: we’ve never had teen interns here at the lab unfortunately….

New New Columbia Mall and the Newest of the Newer of New Sync Mall

Hopefully this is the last time we make a post about Columbia Mall, or Sync Mall, BUT, you have to live through another post. Well, Columbia Mall has been re-re-re built, this time by Ubuntu Houston, the mall, although, pretty dull, is expected to open up a new club, but so far, from most mall clubs, were expecting a dud. Sync was demolished, yet again, as Cody Bracken, decided to turn it into an apartment complex, but changed his mind, and kept it a mall promising renters that he “made some bad desicions with Con [Georgette]” and that “this is the last time we are rebuilding”, yeah, right. Sync still remains THE place to be on whole grid, followed by Dernier Cri.

Asuka’s Designs starts new mens line.

Asuka Martin, owner of the estate Dernier Cri and Asuka’s Designs, responded to complaints from male users that she does not make any mens products, has begun releasing mens clothing, her first release, which took place last week, consisted of T-Shirts. Many hope that this is the start of a new clothing line for men.

Columbia is dead, Sync is flourishing!

Unfortunately, the elegant design of the new Columbia Mall will be going to waste, it is up for sale, and traffic has plummeted, all while the new Sync Mall in Derby has once again made itself the most popular place on the grid!

Columbia Mall in Danger of Closing

Dusty Runo’s Columbia Mall is in danger of closing down after for some unknown reason, Runo lost 9,000 Linden $’s. The Mall is now for sale at 100,000 Linden $’s to any buyer, the objects are included with the sale. The mall was built by one of TSL’s finest builders, Shawn Ay. The mall will still function normally after its Grand Opening on Monday, November 12, 2007. If someone new buys the mall, it will be the fourth change its renters will have to endure, the first being the reconstruction of the old Sync Mall into the new Sync Mall by Shawn Ay, and then the sale to Runo’s [RJ] Land Sales.
